Popcorn Ceilings

Popcorn ceilings were originally started back in the 50’s and continued well into the 80’s in homes everywhere. Now personally I believe that reason the popcorn ceiling style was ever created was to keep the imperfections of the ceiling from being noticeable to the homeowner. Popcorn ceilings collects a lot of dust and very difficult to maintain. It’s not as simple as taking a roller and going over it without having a ton of stuff falling off the ceiling as you roll.
Popcorn ceiling is nothing more than a texture that is sprayed onto the ceiling. Today it is more common for the ceiling to not have the texture. The popcorn ceiling is generally sprayed on rather than rolling. Most contractors will not take the time to roll on the popcorn ceiling because it will take more time and it’s not as cost effective for them.
By choosing to have the popcorn ceiling the homeowner will have to contend with several things one is when the
Now one of the reasons I am talking to you about a popcorn ceiling is because our home has it throughout the house. My wife has always disliked the ceilings. So one day we decided to remove the popcorn look from one of the rooms. Now mind you she calls it cottage cheese. Now removing the popcorn texture from the ceiling was very simple.
The room was approximately 12 x 12 and it took about an hour to remove the texture from the ceiling. The only thing required to remove the texture was a ladder, trash bag, scraper, water bottle and two well rested arms. The scraper was purchased from Lowe’s and if I hadn’t done this personally to my ceiling I would have told you that your crazy if you believe the job will be easy.
The texture came down so quick and easy that we will be removing it from every room in the house. The removal of the texture is very quick. What is so time consuming is removing everything from the rooms.
Something that I am going to tell you is quite funny. Although, when it happened it was so funny to my wife. We both went to pick up the paint supplies to start our project. We were given the advice to add sand texture to the gallon of paint to hide in small imperfections from the removal of the popcorn. So the next morning while I was at work she decides to start the project of painting.
So here’s what happened she added a half box of the sand texture to a fresh gallon of paint. Next she opens the new roller and proceeds to put paint on the roller. She then begins to paint a small area and suddenly the texture from the paint begins to fall on to her face, arms and floor. She gets down from the ladder looks up and she has just covered her ceiling with a fresh new popcorn look. She was so aggravated that she called me at work and told me it looked like spit wads on the ceiling. I couldn’t help but laugh. Of course she laughs about it now but she didn’t when it happened. So lesson learned can’t always take advice from an employee.
